Freight is No Longer Operating in the Background

In my recent White Paper for the Intermodal Association of North America (IANA), Intermodal at the Heart of America’s Supply Chain, I set out to examine a shift we’ve all been seeing repeatedly across the freight and logistics ecosystem: freight is no longer invisible - and intermodal is no longer peripheral.

Freight movement has become a highly visible indicator of economic health. When goods move predictably, confidence follows. When they don’t, the impacts are felt immediately on prices, inventories, and public perception. Federal data shows that changes in freight activity often precede broader economic shifts, elevating logistics performance from an operational concern to a strategic one.

Why Intermodal Has Moved to the Center

At the center of this visibility sits intermodal. Once viewed primarily as a tactical option, intermodal has become a stabilizing force for a system operating at scale and under constant pressure. As volumes grow and expectations rise, reliability is shaped less by raw capacity and more by coordination across rail, truck, terminals, and drayage—especially at hand-offs where small timing issues can quickly become big misses.

The Opportunity Ahead: Long-Haul Freight and Rail

The paper also looks ahead to the next frontier: targeted shifts of long‑haul freight from truck to rail. Even modest diversions can deliver meaningful gains in efficiency, emissions reduction, and network resilience, if they are supported by coordinated planning, modern terminals, and shared visibility.

The takeaway is simple: the future of freight will be defined by systems that can flex, align decisions early, and perform consistently under scrutiny. Intermodal is uniquely positioned to do that, and increasingly it is the foundation of America’s supply chain resilience.
